How do you and Reid stay bonded together? Well Reid’s not in a place where he can get distracted by anyone. So that eliminates any tensions arising from his end and I have a baby that has put my social life on hold (not that there was much of one before), so in terms of potential distractions, I’m practically in the same boat! All joking aside, I think our daily emails play a big role in bringing us closer than, for instance, a monthly phone call. However, even more important than emails is our inner commitment. If you’re strong and sure inside, nothing outside will have enough force to deter you. Of course, any solid relationship requires a commitment from all parties involved. That fact that Reid manages to write little messages to me even during a gale speaks volumes about his side of things. Distance and time can take the edge off certain emotions, but love is not one of them. What is the best and worst thing about being at sea? The best thing about being at sea is experiencing its otherworldly quality. Feeling as if I had landed on another planet that was strange and yet strangely familiar gave rise to a profound sense of connection to the cosmos on a grand and all-pervasive scale. The worst thing about being at sea is the dampness that gets into everything and never seems to let dryness have a turn. I got used to it to a certain extent, but I’ll admit, one of my fantasies was to have a closet stacked with clean crispy dry towels, a closet without plastic. How luxurious. And unattainable at sea. Sunshine and heat can help, but they last only so long. |
