Heron Comes Inside

As I write this the Great Blue Heron is standing in the pilothouse next to me, an arms length away. He has been hanging out with me for five days now. I described how he arrived the night of the big thunderstorm - it rained and blew hard the whole next day and he stayed with us. The next morning he was gone and I had high hopes for him.

In the afternoon he returned and landed on the cockpit table. He was all bedraggled and looked smaller: His mouth was open, he was panting and I could see his heart beating extremely fast. I figured he did not have a chance now as there was nothing for him to eat or drink and he had lost weight and strength. I gave him a bowl of fresh water and a bowl of sprouts which he did not partake of.

Now I don't now what to do for him except be kind and let him do whatever he likes. He prefers standing on the wooden cockpit table close to where I am. I speak to him and try to soothe him. When he is in my way, I "moo" like a cow and move slowly until he gets out of my way. He took to standing right in front of the hatch and now he is standing in the pilothouse. This is probably the first time in his life he has been on a boat or inside a man made thing or even close to a human.

I'll continue with my afternoon activities working on the computer, sending this update, and if that goes well I'll create some art until sunset.
